Garden Centres

  in  The Garden
Garden centres came into being about fifty years and originated in America. Before the concept caught on in this country we bought our plants from local nurseries. Many of thes nurseries, small and mainly family owned and run, only sold plants which were in season. And some of these still exist throughout the country - and long may they continue. Over the last decade or so the garden centres have grown considerably (what else would you expect from a garden centre?). They have also greatly increased their product range. Much of their floor space is now devoted to all the other garden and gardening requirements. This includes garden and patio furniture, machinery, tools, books, and in many cases fish. Often included also is a cafe or restaurant and perhaps a children's play area. A visit to a garden centre these days is more of a leisure experience than a basic shopping trip for a few plants.
